Foreign license conversion (Gaimen Kirikae) is the process of converting a driver's license obtained in a foreign country to a Japanese driver's license. This is necessary for Specified Skilled Workers who want to work as drivers in Japan.
Passport, Residence Card, foreign driver's license, Japanese translation (from JAF or embassy), photo, residence certificate
Apply at the driver's license center with jurisdiction over your address. Appointments may be required.
Take aptitude tests including vision test and color recognition test.
A knowledge confirmation of traffic rules and a practical driving skills test will be conducted.
Upon passing, a Japanese driver's license will be issued.
Application fee: approx. 2,550 yen, issuance fee: approx. 2,050 yen (varies by prefecture)
